Story of Noah -- story of judgment or of salvation.

Don Bunting

God's account of the life of Noah can be read in Genesis, chapters six through nine.  For the most part, you will find a description of the immorality and violence of the general population of the world.

"Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.  And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.  So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." (Genesis 6:5-7).

The flood became God's judgment upon the earth.  All people along with all other living things were to be destroyed because of sin.  This is a story of judgment.

But God knows the heart of every person on the earth.  Noah found grace in God's eyes.  He was a just man.  Noah walked with God.  He was not sinless (Genesis 9:20-23), but our gracious God knows when and how to extend mercy.  God knows how to save.

In Hebrews 11:7 we read that God warned Noah of His plan to flood the earth and gave him instructions to prepare an ark "for the saving of his household..."  Noah and his family were saved from the destruction and judgment of the flood by their faithful obedience.

1 Peter 3:20-21 speaks of another salvation in the story of Noah.  The text says that God "waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water."  The water is said to be that by which eight people were saved.  From what did the water save them?  The next verse explains, that like baptism, the water saved Noah and family.  They were saved from sin and wickedness.

Noah was delivered from the flood by water, escaping judgment.  Noah was delivered from that evil generation, escaping sin and wickedness.
